Qld; Holiday road toll rises to six
BRISBANE, Dec 31 AAP - Queensland's Christmas-New Year road toll has risen to six with
the deaths of three people on the state's roads yesterday, police said.
Senior Constable Dirk Japin of the State Traffic Support Branch said the holiday road
toll for this year was now double the three deaths recorded in the same period last year.
Police at El Arish in the state's north, said that a 15-year-old boy died after losing
control of the car he was driving on the Bruce Highway at 2.30am yesterday.
The vehicle rolled 40 metres down a hillside and landed upside down in a gully.
In another accident, a 36-year-old woman learning to ride a motorcycle lost control
of it and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction on the
Mt Lindesay Highway near Beaudesert, south-west of Brisbane around 9.30am.
Also yesterday, a 30-year-old man died after losing control of a car on the Gregory
Highway at Capella, central Queensland, around 5.30pm.
The car apparently lost tread from its two back tyres before it rolled.
The names of the three accidents victims have not yet been released.
The three deaths bring Queensland's road toll for 1999 to 310, up 31 from the 279 deaths
recorded last year.
