Vic: State s year 2000 road toll up by 23

MELBOURNE, Jan 1 AAP - Victoria's year 2000 road toll was up by 23 on last year, but
the number of fatalities in December was the lowest for that month in nearly 50 years,
police said today.

Assistant Commissioner Ray Shuey, the state's head of traffic operations, said Victoria's
year 2000 road toll was 406.

The result was disappointing, he said, but efforts at reducing the December road toll
had paid off.

He said the December road toll of 26 was the best since 1952.
